The Honorable Robert J. Staker, 83, of Huntington, WV passed away Sunday November 30, 2008 at Heartland of Riverview, So. Point, OH. Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Thursday, December 4, 2008 at Enslow Park Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Monty Brown and Rev. Jim Fisher officiating. Burial will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery. Judge Staker was born February 14, 1925 at Kermit, WV, a son of the late Frederick G. Staker, Sr. and Nada Frazer Staker. In addition to his parents, he was was preceded in death by a son, J. Timothy Poore, and three brothers, Fred G. Staker, Jr., Dr. Norman Staker and Zane Grey Staker. He graduated from Kermit High School and then served in the U. S. Navy aboard a destroyer in the Pacific in WW II. He attended Marshall University and West Virginia University Law School where he received his Law Degree in 1952. He practiced Law in Williamson, WV for 17 years. During that time he also served as Assistant Prosecuting Attorney and Williamson City Attorney He then served as Mingo County Circuit Judge for 10 years. In 1979, he was appointed by President Jimmy Carter to serve as a United State District Judge for the Southern District of West Virginia. He served with integrity, fairness, compassion and clarity throughout his career. He took Senior Status in January of 1995 and served with distinction until his retirement in 2005. He was a devoted member of Enslow Park Presbyterian Church, Huntington, where was designated Elder Emeritus. He lived a full and happy life surrounded by those who loved him. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Sue Poore Staker, a son Donald Seth Staker of Charleston, WW, a brother, Dr. Donald E. Staker, and his wife Patsy of Huntington, WV a sister, Virginia Chrisman of Mountain View, MO, daughter-in-law, Sandra Poore, of Huntington, WV; two granddaughters, Julie (Poore) Hatfield and husband Cary Lee of Williamson, WV and Amy Poore of Charlotte, NC; two great granddaughters, Alexandra Poore and Madison Hatfield; nieces and nephews Karla Chrisman of Mountain View, MO, Charylnn Aldrich of Marble Falls, TX, Samuel Z. Staler, of San Antonio, TX, Frederick G. Staker, III, of Huntington, WV, Lant R. Staker of Lexington, KY, Douglas Staler, of Beckley, WV, William N. Staker of Huntington, WV, and Noah F. Staker of Rush, KY. The family will receive friends at the visitation at Enslow Park Presbyterian Church at 11:00 AM prior to the funeral. Online condolences may be sent to www.chapmans-mortuary.com.
