Elliott "Spike" Maynard December 8, 1942 - May 1, 2014 Former West Virginia Supreme Court Justice Elliott Edward Maynard, Jr., of Charleston, and a native son of Williamson, died at the Charleston Area Medical Center, Memorial Division, on May 1, 2014. Born in Williamson on December 8, 1942, he was a son of the late Elliott Edward Maynard, Sr. and Kentucky Burgess McCoy Maynard. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Cletis and Darvin Maynard; a sister, Mae Fern Cesco; a sister-in-law, Mary Helen Maynard and a nephew, Danny Cesco. Maynard was a graduate of Belfry High School. He served in the United States Air Force from 1961 to 1966. He received a bachelor’s degree from Florida Southern College in 1967. He attended West Virginia University’s College of Law, where he earned his degree in 1974. He maintained a private law practice in Williamson for a number of years. He served as the Mingo County Prosecuting Attorney for several years before being appointed in 1981 as the judge of the 30th Judicial Circuit. Maynard served one 12 year term, 1996 to 2008, as a Supreme Court Judge. Known as Spike, to family and friends, he had a deep affection for books and was an avid reader throughout his life. An often overlooked credential earned by Spike was that of Eagle Scout. Spike was deeply loved by his large, extended family. He will be sorely missed and lovingly remembered always. He is survived by a son, Elliott Edward “Tack” Maynard, III, Atlanta, GA; his soul mate and companion, Karen Cross of Washington, DC; a beloved sister and her husband, June and Clarence Mitchell of Williamson; two granddaughters, Brittany (Matt) Marcum and Kathryn Maynard, both of Ransom, KY; a great-grandson, Braxton David Marcum; a sister-in-law, Joan Maynard of Williamson; nieces and nephews, Carolyn (Johnny) Hylton of Hardy, KY, Debbie (Estil) Hylton, Forest Hills, KY, Cletis “Smokey” (Marcell) Maynard, Hardy, KY, Mark (Edna Thompson) Mitchell, Williamson, Lori Mitchell (Scott) Warren, Delray Beach, FL, Randy (Penny) Cesco, Cincinnati, OH, Talmadge (Mark Hopkins) Cesco, Cincinnati, OH, Bruce (Suzanne) Cesco, Cincinnati, OH, Brian (Karen) Cesco, Florence, KY, Terry (Larry) Wood, Smithville, VA, Linda Maynard, Williamson, Jennifer (Al) Cutter of Montana; great-nieces and great-nephews, Michael Hylton, J. J. (Jenny) Hylton, Tara (Joe) Venturino, Brent Hylton, Jordan (Cashena Hackney) Hylton, Dustin (Candice) Maynard, Chelsea, Elliott and Courtney Cesco; Amanda and Toby Cutter and Bailey Warren. He is also survived by several great-great nieces and nephews, including Victoria, with whom he shared a special bond. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 pm, Sunday, May 4, 2014, at the Belfry Baptist Church.The body will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to the service. Pastor Mark Helton and the Rev. Mitchell Bias will officiate. Interment is in the Mountain View Memory Gardens at Huddy, KY. Great nephews will serve as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers include Mark Stanley, W. Thomas Ward, Ronald J. Rumora, Don Blankenship and Stewart Justice, Jr. Masonic Rites and Military Rites will both be presented at the graveside. Visitation is from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, Saturday, May 3, 2014, at Weaver Mortuary. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Williamson Public Library, 101 Logan Street, Williamson, WV 25661.
